“Suits” is one of my favorites TV series, and Harvey Spectre is one of the reasons behind it. Although the character is fictional, everything he says or does makes a lot of sense. Sometimes these fictional characters do teach us, so does Harvey specter.
Harvey Spectre is the boss, and he makes things happen. He keeps his calm in every situation, and he does kick some asses. He is the right person to be a mentor. Here I am sharing the seven life lessons from Harvey Spectre.
1. Sometimes you have to break the rules.
As Harvey says, Playing by the rules will take you nowhere. We all live by rules weather they are social or constitutional, and we do follow them. Rules are there to regulate the actions we take in our daily life, but sometimes they hold us back from doing extraordinary things. As the laws are made by keeping the past in focus, they are meant to be broken.
I am not saying that start doing the crazy stuff, just bend some rules because your competition will do the same. So don’t be left behind, winning is what matters when you are right.
2. Appearance does matter.
The first thing people notice about you is how you are dressed. Your appearance defines how they perceive you. Do you want to make people take you sincerely from the first time you meet them? Your dressing will do the part. A polished appearance will give you the upper hand from the start. So suit up.
3. Keep calm
Don’t announce the problem; fix it.
No matter how bad the situation is, keep your composer. As they say, “pressure makes diamonds, but this is only true for those who don’t let the pressure of the situation get to them.”
No one cares about your situation or how bad you are feeling. Just remember you are here to do stuff and produce the desired results, Or there is always someone willing to take your job. So losing your calm is not an option.
4. Just because you are rookie doesn’t mean you have to think like one.
Sometimes when we are new, we usually feel intimidated by old players. So Harvey says don’t let your lack of experience hold you back. Start following the best player, and eventually, you will surpass most of them. Think like you know nothing and absorb as much information possible, keep an open mind for criticism and keep improvising.
5. Communication is the key.
It’s going to happen, because I’m going to make it happen – Harvey Specter
Sometimes others don’t see what you see, and you gotta back yourself to make your point. Speak with authority, your choice of words, tone, and pace impacts the amount of persuasion. Harvey Specter is a highly competent lawyer, and he knows it. He always uses body movement to make his point or explain the situation. Harvey still stands while building a strong point.
6. Don’t play the odds; play the man.
Harvey is a lawyer, and he knows the law which every other lawyer knows too. What makes him different is his ability to read people. He understands human emotions and triggers and uses them on his opponent. He adjusts his strategy based on observations of people’s emotional reactions to specific points, and that’s why he is the most magnificent closure.
7. Loose small to win big.
That’s the difference between you and me, you wanna lose small, I wanna win big.
Harvey is always up for challenging activities and does what it takes to come out of it. If you want to make something of yourself, you have to put yourself out there and go after it. Don’t try to cut your losses, and it’s a weak mentality; it holds you back from achieving greatness.
That’s Harvey for you. Below are some of those quotes worth mentioning.
“When you are backed against the wall, break the goddamn thing down.” – Harvey Specter
