Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, is a popular tourist destination known for its hill station charm, toy train rides, and stunning views. Located at an elevation of 2,276 meters, Shimla experiences snowfall from December to February. The best time to visit is from March to June, when temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C, perfect for outdoor activities like paragliding, trekking, and camping.
In January, we began our trip to Shimla from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. We decided to travel by bike, covering a distance of about 243 kilometers.
DAY 1: We set off early morning at around 6 o’clock, riding two Avengers with two riders and two pillions. Our route from Dehradun to Shimla included Sudhowala, Paonta Sahib, Nahan, and Solan. As we passed by Paonta Sahib, we enjoyed a beautiful lake where birds gathered, making it a great spot to stop for 10-15 minutes and enjoy birdwatching.
The road from Dehradun to Nahan is well-maintained and has two lanes, which helps avoid traffic delays. However, after Nahan, as you head towards Solan, the 87-kilometer stretch has a few important points to keep in mind:
- Make sure your bike is well-serviced and checked before the trip.
- Ensure your fuel tank is full, and check the air pressure in your tires.
- Carry enough drinking water and snacks for the journey.
The above points are because no fuel stations or shops along this stretch exist. If needed, you can take the alternative route via the Chandigarh-Shimla highway. Here are some reasons why I chose this route:
- Enjoy the scenic beauty of the snow-capped mountains along the route.
- Fewer vehicles are on this route, so you’ll avoid traffic jams.
We stopped for lunch near Solan, where the dhaba had a beautiful view of snow-capped mountains in the background. After lunch, we continued our journey and arrived in Shimla around 5 p.m.
DAY 2: The night before, we enjoyed snowfall and were excited for the next day. We began our day by walking to Mall Road and The Ridge, where we had breakfast. Mall Road has various shops, including clothing stores, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Key attractions near Mall Road include Kalibari Temple, Chadwick Falls, Christ Church, Scandal Point, Johnnie’s Wax Museum, and Lakkar Bazaar.
DAY 3: As the snowfall began, we started riding to Kufri, about 17 km away. The journey involved sharp turns and heavy traffic on the two-way lane, so we had to drive cautiously. Snow covered both sides of the road, making the drive challenging. The route to Kufri was steep and included passing through tunnels.
When we arrived, we experienced live snowfall. We rented woolen jackets and boots from local shops. Boots cost around Rs. 200 per day, and woolen coats cost approximately Rs. 500 (prices may vary). Due to the high number of tourists, renting these items quickly is a good idea, as they might sell out.
We then embarked on a 3—to 4-km trek to the hilltop. Horse rides and porters are available for those who prefer not to trek. At the top, we enjoyed various activities such as skiing (Rs. 500 for 3 hours), rope climbing, snow sliding, and photo opportunities with mountain bunnies (Rs. 50 per person) and snowmen.
We had a great time at Kufri and returned to our hotel in Shimla by evening.
DAY 4: We checked our bikes thoroughly before starting our journey from Shimla at around 8 a.m. On the way, we stopped in Solan for a thrilling paragliding experience with Airborne Paragliding. The adventure was incredible and got our adrenaline pumping.
Paragliding costs about Rs. 2,000 per person and lasts around 15 minutes, but setting up takes about an hour. So, you should plan for about 2 hours for the entire experience.
Afterward, we headed directly to Dehradun.
