There's a moment somewhere on the climb to the Amarnath cave — usually around the halfway point, when your legs are tired and the air is noticeably thinner — when the pilgrimage stops being about the destination and starts being about something else entirely.
We've watched it happen to pilgrims for over 20 years from our base in Srinagar. Something shifts. The noise of planning, booking, and logistics falls away, and what's left is just the climb, the cold, and the breath.
But that moment only arrives if you prepared properly before you left home. Here's what that preparation actually looks like.
Register before you travel — this year more than ever
The Amarnath Yatra 2026 opened on July 3rd and has already seen over 2.27 lakh pilgrims complete darshan — a 28% rise on last year. The energy this season has been extraordinary. But it's also meant stricter enforcement: unregistered pilgrims are being stopped at checkpoints before base camp. Every pilgrim needs their own permit, registered in their name, before they travel.
Register at jksasb.nic.in with a health certificate dated on or after 8th April 2026, your Aadhaar card, and approximately Rs. 150. Travel only on your registered date — arriving early doesn't grant early access to the trail.
Choose your route with honesty, not ambition
The Baltal route is 14 km. The Pahalgam route is 36 to 48 km over several days. Most pilgrims choose Baltal because it's shorter. Many of them struggle more than they expected, because at 3,888 metres, distance is almost irrelevant — it's the altitude that tests you.
Pahalgam is gentler. The climb is gradual, the views are longer, and the body adjusts more naturally to the thinning air. For first-timers and families, it's the route that lets you arrive at the cave with something left in you — energy to be present, not just relieved.
What the mountain asks of you before you go
Walk 4 to 6 km daily, on an incline if possible, at least a month before you travel. Not to prove anything, but because the trail will ask this of your body and it's kinder to answer with preparation than struggle.
Drink water steadily. Acclimatise for a day in Srinagar before the climb. And if you feel breathless or dizzy on the trail, descend — medical camps sit every 2 km on both routes, and there's no wisdom in pushing through altitude sickness.
The practical things nobody mentions
Your prepaid SIM from outside J&K won't work on the route — get a BSNL connection before base camp. Build two buffer days into your plan for weather and highway closures. SASB has doubled accident insurance to Rs. 10 lakh for all registered pilgrims at no extra charge. Free accommodation is available at base camp points for registered pilgrims.
