Stop Brainstorming. Do This Instead.
The counterintuitive method that generated 10x more original ideas for me than any brainstorming session. It takes 10 minutes.
The Worst Idea First
Before you try to solve a problem, list 10 terrible solutions. The worse, the better. This flushes out the obvious and frees your brain to wander into weird territory. It's easier to improve a bad idea than to birth a perfect one.
Your brain on constraints
Research shows that constraints boost creativity by forcing novel connections. So instead of 'think outside the box', try shrinking the box.
The 6-3-5 Method
Six people, three ideas each, five minutes. Write silently, then pass. No talking. This method produces 108 ideas in 30 minutes—and the silent part is key. Talking kills originality because we self-censor.
The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.
Steal Like an Artist
Creativity isn't magic; it's remixing. Take two unrelated things and smash them together. The printing press? A wine press meets movable type. The best ideas are collisions, not lightning strikes.
Collision course
Force connections between random objects and your problem. A paperclip and a coffee mug. What do they suggest? The result might be your next breakthrough.
Walk Away
After you've loaded your brain with the problem, do something else. Literally walk away. The incubation effect is real: your subconscious keeps working while you're not. The answer often comes in the shower, not at the desk.
