The Stonecutter's Secret: A Parable of Purpose

One day, he sighs, 'If only I were a wealthy merchant, I wouldn't have to do this.' A passing spirit grants his wish. Instantly, he becomes a merchant, trading silks and spices. Yet soon, the merchant worries about losing his fortune and envies the power of a king.

The merchant becomes a king, commanding armies and building palaces. But the sun beats down on his kingdom, and he feels powerless against its heat. 'If only I were the sun,' he thinks. The spirit grants that too, and he shines fiercely over the land.

As a cloud, he is powerful until he meets a rock that stands unmoved by his storms. Frustrated, he wishes to be that rock. He becomes a massive boulder, feeling invincible. But then, he hears a tap-tap-tap: a stonecutter is chipping away at him.
